Duloxetine (Cymbalta)

What is Duloxetine 30mg used for?

Duloxetine capsules are used to treat symptoms of depression, anxiety and can be used to treat some nervous system pain such as diabetic neuropathy and arthritis. It works by increasing and restoring your body’s natural levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain. Duloxetine works to improve your mood which in turn can increase your appetite, energy levels, ability to sleep soundly and regulate your levels of nervousness.

If taken for depression or anxiety, patients can expect to feel the results of the medicine within 2-4 weeks. In those suffering with nervous system pain, it may take up to 2 months to feel the full benefits from consuming Duloxetine. Your doctor may continue your prescription of this medicine even after you feel better, to maintain your improvement.

This medicine may be used to alleviate and improve the symptoms of anxiety in adults and children over the age of 7 years old.

Duloxetine Dosage

Here at Medicine Direct, we sell Duloxetine online in 30mg and 40mg strengths. It may take up to two hours for either strength of Duloxetine to be sufficiently absorbed by your body. Optimum concentration of Duloxetine in the blood has been found 6 hours after consuming the dose of medicine.

Duloxetine 30mg

Doctors generally prescribe this lower dose to treat depression and anxiety disorders. You can expect the initial dose to be 30mg orally twice a day. If your doctor has advised you to take a large dosage of Duloxetine, he may ask you to still administer it in divided doses of 30mg throughout the day.

Duloxetine 40mg

Although this is prescribed for depression, anxiety and nervous system pains, it is also used to improve the symptoms of Stress Urinary Incontinence in women. The general dosage is 40mg twice daily, ideally in the morning and late afternoon or evening.

How to take Duloxetine

Duloxetine 30mg and 40mg capsules are to be taken orally between once and twice a day depending on your doctor’s advice. For best effects and practise, you should take your dosage of Duloxetine at the same times each day.

Take the medicine with a glass of water and do not chew or crush the outside of it as this may increase the side effects as the drug will be released too quickly. It can be taken before or after eating a meal.

You must not stop taking or self adjust your dosage of Duloxetine without consulting your doctor or pharmacist. Your disorder must be treated in accordance to the guidelines set by your medical advisor in order to be effectively improved. If you do not follow the guidance given to you for the correct administration of Duloxetine, then your symptoms may worsen or become more severe and so become more challenging to medicate.

If you realise that you have forgotten to take a dose of the medicine you must take it as quickly as possible. You must not double dose to make up for forgotten capsules. If it is close to your next Duloxetine consumption, just skip the dose and continue as normal. If you consume more Duloxetine than has been advised to you, you must contact your doctor or pharmacist for immediate advice. Be on the look out for symptoms of over dose which are sleepiness, coma, serotonin syndrome which is a rare reaction involving the sensation of intense happiness, drowsiness, restlessness, fever and sweating or rigidity, vomiting and fits.

Moreover, be aware that some patients who did not follow medical advice and so stopped taking their prescribed medication within a week of taking it experienced symptoms such as:

  • Tingling sensation, likened to pins and needles
  • Dizziness (vertigo), agitation, feeling anxious, shaking or feeling restless
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Excessive sweating

Although these symptoms are not deemed serious and usually disappear after a few days, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned.

Below are the usual recommendation of the strength and dosage of Duloxetine in accordance to your condition:

  • Duloxetine for Neuropathy pain

Doctors will usually advice patients to taken 60mg once a day. It will be discontinued if there is an insufficient response within 2 months of beginning to take Duloxetine. The maximum dosage given to treat this condition is 120mg per day, consumed in divided doses.

  • Duloxetine for anxiety and depression disorders

You will, to begin with, be advised to take Duloxetine 30mg once every day. After review of your symptoms, this dosage may be increased to 60mg by your doctor. The maximum amount of Duloxetine to be taken daily on your doctors advice is 120mg.

  • Duloxetine for incontinence

As a general rule, you will be administered 40mg twice a day or 20mg twice daily for 2 weeks. This maybe increased after your symptoms are re-assessed by a doctor or pharmacist as they may decide you need a stronger dosage to tackle your symptoms.
