Modafinil is a wakefullness promoting medication used to treat individuals suffereing from excessive sleep disorders and Narcolepsy. It increases a patients wakefullness and helps individuals that take it to stay awake and reduce the likelihood of suffering a sleep attack
What is Modafinil
Modafinil, which is also sold under the branded name of Provigil, is a drug which combats excessive tiredness. It increases a patients’ wakefulness by stimulating a part of your brain, and so help those taking it to stay awake. Modafinil is commonly prescribed for patients who suffer with Narcolepsy which can cause someone to feel excessively tired and fall asleep without control during the daytime or at inappropriate moments. Although there are some other techniques those suffering from narcolepsy may be able to adopt in order to promote wakefulness, your doctor may prescribe you Modafinil in order to improve your Narcolepsy and reduce the likelihood of suffering a sleep attack.
Due to its properties of stimulating wakefulness, Modafinil may also be prescribed to treat Shift Work Sleep Disorder and excessive sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea.
It is unknown exactly how this medicine promotes wakefulness, however, doctors think that it may be responsible for increases your levels of dopamine which is a chemical neurotransmitter nerves use to communicate with one another. It may increase the levels of these neurotransmitters by decreasing the rate in which dopamine is absorbed into the nerves.
Modafinil is commonly prescribed by doctors in 100mg or 200mg strength dosages. It is generally recommended to take a dose of 200mg once a day.
This is the lowest dosage of Modafinil available. Generally, Modafinil 100mg strength is prescribed for patients over 65 years to commence their course. This dosage may be increased if it is not effective in treating symptoms. Those who suffer with severe kidney problems will also be prescribed this lower strength.
This strength dosage of Modafinil is perhaps the most widely prescribed to treat excessive sleep disorders. It is important you do not exceed this dosage unless you have been advised by your doctor. Modafinil 200mg can be used to treat a variety of sleep disorders as well as treating adults who suffer from excessive sleepiness. The recommended starting dosage is 1 x Modafinil 200mg tablet per day
400mg is the strongest dose of Modafinil available. Usually, this strength is only administered by doctors after review of taking a course of 200mg. If the 200mg strength is found to have not alleviated a patients’ sleepiness, then a doctor may then increase the dosage strength to 400mg.
Modafinil mechanism of action and how to take
Doctors will usually prescribe and advise patients to administer one Modafinil 200mg tablet per day. Generally, it should be taken in the morning to treat narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea. For those suffering with shift work disorder, the advice is to take Modafinil one hour before work.
If you will be taking Modafinil for a long-term solution to excessive tiredness, it is expected to be periodically re-evaluated by your doctor as it is unclear as of yet if Modafinil is efficient long term.
If you have forgotten to take a dose of Modafinil do not double up your consumption to make up for it. Take your next tablet at the usual time.
Please also note that Modafinil and a range of some other medicines, such as hormonal contraception, can effect the effectiveness of each other which may mean your doctor will have to adjust the strength of dosage you take. Ensure that you tell your doctor of all other medicines that you take during your consultation.
If you take more Modafinil than you have been recommended to consume you may feel: sick, disorientated or confused, restless, agitated/ anxious, have trouble sleeping, diarrhoea, hallucinations, chest pain, a change in heart beat rate or an increase in your blood pressure. You must contact your nearest hospital or your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms. If you are asked to go and see a medical advisor, you should take any remaining tablets with you.
Below are the Modafinil dosage recommendations your doctor may advise you to follow in accordance with your condition:
- Excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy with or without cataplexy
Your doctor will normally begin your treatment course with a Modafinil 200mg dose divided into two 100mg tablets, one to be taken in the morning and one at noon. Alternatively, your doctor may recommend you to take just one Modafinil 200mg tablet per day to be consumed in the morning.
- If you are 65 years or over, or suffering from liver or kidney problems
It is to be expected that you will be initially prescribed to take Modafinil 100mg once daily.
