What is Colgate Duraphat?
Colgate Duraphat is a high fluoride toothpaste that is often prescribed for people who are at a higher risk of suffering from tooth decay.
It contains a higher level of sodium fluoride compared to a regular toothpaste. Colgate Duraphat is available to buy online at Medicine Direct following an online consultation with one of our certified doctors.
If you order with us before 2pm, we can offer you free next day delivery on your product.
What is Colgate Duraphat used to treat?
Colgate Duraphat toothpaste is used to help prevent and reverse the early stages of tooth decay.
It contains more than three times the amount of fluoride a normal toothpaste contains. Clinical studies have shown that a fluoride toothpaste like Colgate Duraphat can prevent tooth decay and even reverse the early stages of decay, making for healthier teeth and improved oral health.
Your dentist or health professional will have diagnosed you with an increased risk of tooth decay in order for you to purchase this product.
Who can use Colgate Duraphat?
Colgate Duraphat toothpaste is suitable for adults and children who are aged 16 and over.
It is not suitable for children under 16 years old.
It is generally prescribed for people who have any of the following:
- Active tooth decay or a history of tooth decay
- Exposed root surfaces
- High sugar diets
- Orthodontic appliances
- Dry mouth
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to fluoride or any of the other ingredients contained within it (please refer to the Ingredients tab for full details).
If you have any questions or concerns as to whether this fluoride toothpaste is a suitable product for you to use, please speak to your dentist or pharmacist before you start using it.
Always read the patient information leaflet before you start using a new medication.
Possible side effects
As is the case with any prescription medicine, Duraphat toothpaste comes with the risk of side effects, although not everyone who uses it will be affected by them.
Side effects of using Duraphat toothpastes are extremely rare and are generally mild in nature.
In extremely rare cases (less than 1 in every 1,000 people who are treated), some people have reported a burning sensation in their mouth.
You should contact your doctor if this reaction bothers you or does not go away.
Please note, this may not be the only adverse effect you could experience. Speak to your health professional about all the risks associated with Duraphat toothpastes before you begin using one.
Please refer to the Side Effects tab on this page for more serious reactions you could suffer.
Colgate Duraphat Dose and Directions
Always follow your dentist or pharmacist's instructions when using fluoride toothpaste. Read the patient information leaflet thoroughly before you use it and check with your dentist or pharmacist if you are not sure how to use it.
Use Colgate Duraphat as a replacement for your normal toothpaste.
Apply 2cm of the toothpaste to your toothbrush and brush your teeth thoroughly three times a day, ideally after each meal.
Spit out the excess foam and avoid drinking or eating for at least 30 minutes after brushing; this will give the fluoride time to work on your teeth. Do not swallow the foam.
What if I forget to use it?
If you forget to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, brush them as soon as you remember.
To successfully prevent tooth decay, it is vital that you brush your teeth at least twice, preferably 3 times each day. This should be done first thing in the morning, after an evening meal and before you go to bed. Do not over-brush your teeth as this can wear down the enamel.
If you have trouble remembering to brush your teeth, some people find it useful to set an alarm as a reminder.
