Condyline for the treatment of Genital Warts

Genital warts are a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Genital warts are highly contagious and can be passed on even when there are no visible signs of genital warts.

Genital warts may go away without the need of treatment, however in most cases it can take months for the warts to clear. Condyline can clear genital warts within 4 weeks of treatment.

Condyline is a prescription only medicine in the UK, it can be bought online from Medicine Direct.

What is Condyline?

Condyline is a topical cutaneous solution which contains the plant extract podophyllotoxin as its active ingredient.

Condyline solution is primarily used in the treatment of genital warts in both men and women. To destroy the genital warts, Condyline must be applied in weekly cycles.

It will normally clear smaller outbreaks within five weeks of treatment.

What is Condyline used to treat?

Most people who are given a prescription to use Condyline are done so to treat genital warts.

This treatment can often improve the condition within just three days of use, although it may take longer for genital warts to clear completely.

Genital warts are the result of an infection of the human papillomavirus (HPV). The warts can grow around the vagina, penis or anus and are frequently spread through sexual intercourse. While both men and women can suffer from genital warts, the problem is slightly more common in women.

How does Condyline work?

This solution contains the plant extract podophyllotoxin, which enters the nuclei of the infected cells and acts on the mechanism that makes genital wart cells divide. This means that genital warts cannot grow or spread to anywhere else, which promotes healthy skin to replace the wart tissue.

Condyline is effective in the treatment of genital warts when used at an early stage, before the infection has had a chance to spread over a larger area. Condyline is most effective when used on smaller warts and can help to suppress the signs and symptoms caused by genital warts.

How to use Condyline

You should start your course of treatment in the morning.

Use Condyline twice a day for three days. This means you will have six treatments in three days. After this, you should not apply the treatment again in the first week.

  1. Wash the affected area with soap and water before you apply Condyline. Dry the clean skin well.
  2. Dip the end of the applicator stick with a hole in it into the bottle. Dip the stick far enough so that the hole is filled with solution.
  3. Apply the solution to a wart and let it dry on its own. Cover each wart in the same way. Do not use more than 50 dips.
  4. Replace the bottle’s top and wash your hands thoroughly after use.
  5. You should repeat these steps 12 hours later and then again the next morning, twice a day.

If one week of treatment is not sufficient to remove all your warts, your doctor may tell you to repeat this treatment cycle for a second time. You may also need to do this for several more weeks after this. Tell your doctor if your warts have not healed after the recommended course of treatment.

Always make sure you read the patient information leaflet before you start to use Condyline. Here, you will find full details on instructions.

Who can use Condyline?

You should not use Condyline if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are currently using or have recently used any other medicines which contain podophyllotoxin
  • You have recently had surgery and still have any open wounds near the affected area
  • You are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any other ingredients contained in this solution

This medicine should only be used by adults, it is not suitable for children.

If you have any concerns as to whether Condyline is suitable for you, do not hesitate to speak to your doctor.

Further information can be found under the Warnings tab on this page. Always read the patient information leaflet for full details on warnings.

Can you buy Condyline over the counter?

No, Condyline is only available on prescription, so cannot be bought over the counter.

Can you buy Condyline online in the UK?

Before you buy Condyline online from Medicine Direct, you will need to have an online consultation. All you need to do is complete a confidential questionnaire about your condition and medical history, which will be reviewed by one of our prescribers to make sure Condyline is suitable for you to use.

Next day delivery is available if you order by 2pm.

Medicine Direct is fully regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), the MHRA and other official medical authorities. Never buy any medicine online from anywhere other than regulated UK pharmacies.

Condyline alternatives

Various treatments can help to clear genital warts. Warticon is another renowned medication for effectively treating genital warts in a similar time frame as Condyline. Warticon is available as a cream or solution; while both contain the same active ingredient, the cream may be better suited for women, while the solution may be easier for men to treat genital warts.

Aldara Cream is also available. This cream works by killing the cells within the warts to stop them spreading and will normally clear the problem within 8 weeks.

Condyline Dosage

Our pharmacist and prescribers follow NICE prescribing guidelines when prescribing Condyline.

Condyline should only be applied externally. Do not apply the solution to any soft mucous membrane tissue, such as the vagina or anus.

Avoid contact with the eyes, lips and nostrils.

What if I miss an application?

If you miss a scheduled application time, apply Condyline as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed treatment and continue to apply the solution as usual.

Do not double up a dose of any medication to try and make up for a missed dose. This will not work and can increase your chances of developing unwanted side effects as a result.

To ensure you do not forget to apply this treatment, it is best if you apply it at the same times every day to get into a routine of doing it.

How fast will Condyline treat my warts?

Normally, Condyline will have cleared a case of genital warts within five weeks. If you still have genital warts after this length of treatment, tell your doctor.

How safe is Condyline?

Condyline is considered to be a safe medicine providing you use it as instructed and only when prescribed. In the unlikely event that you exhibit any symptoms of an allergic reaction, you should stop using it immediately and seek medical attention.

Is HPV a lifelong problem?

HPV can be dormant in a person for many years after they catch it. Most cases of HPV will clear within two years due to the immune system being able to fight it off. After this time, the virus will be eliminated from the body.

Is Condyline better than Warticon?

Condyline and Warticon both contain the same active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, and both work in the same way. Both also have similar treatment lengths for genital warts.

Do I need to be worried if I have HPV?

HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. In a lot of instances, the body can fight the virus on its own and it will go away without causing any issues within one or two years. If HPV causes issues like genital warts, you should speak to your doctor or sexual health clinic about the most appropriate treatment. If you are diagnosed with HPV, it is important to see your doctor.

Can I cut warts off myself?

You should never cut warts off yourself. This will not treat the problem and often just helps to spread the virus. Always speak to your doctor about using a medical treatment.

How long can warts last?

Without treatment, most people’s warts will clear up after around two years. However, using a wart treatment can help to make the warts last for a significantly shorter period than this.

When should I stop my treatment with Condyline?

Do not use Condyline once the bottle has been open for six weeks. If your doctor tells you to stop using the medicine, or if your warts have cleared completely, you can also stop using it. How long you will need to use Condyline will depend on how your warts respond to treatment.

What if Condyline doesn’t work?

If you find that your genital warts do not respond to treatment after five weeks, speak to your doctor.

Can I drink alcohol with it?

Drinking alcohol will not affect Condyline.

Condyline Side Effects

In some instances, you may suffer a severe allergic reaction to Condyline and require immediate treatment in hospital.

The most common side effects can be found on the main product page.

Condyline Warnings and drug interactions

Like all medicines, Condyline may interact with other medications.

Do not stop using this medicine until you have completed the course of treatment outlined by your doctor. Similarly, do not keep using it for longer than your doctor has instructed you to.
