About Anusol Plus HC 12 Suppositories
  1. What are Anusol Plus HC suppositories?

Anusol Plus HC suppositories are a treatment for the symptoms of anal itching and internal and external haemorrhoids (piles).

They contain the following active ingredients: hydrocortisone acetate, benzyl benzoate, bismuth subgallate, bismuth oxide, zinc oxide and balsam peru. Each of these ingredients possess different properties which work to relieve your symptoms and aid recovery.

Each pack contains 12 suppositories. You can buy Anusol Plus HC suppositories without a prescription. They are suitable for adults over 18 years old.

What are Anusol Plus HC Suppositories used to treat?

Anusol Plus HC is used in the treatment of haemorrhoids (piles). These suppositories should be inserted into the anus up to three times a day to relieve the problem.

Piles are a very common problem which will affect around 40% of people at some point during their lives. There are various different treatment options available to resolve this problem, but many people are too embarrassed to seek medical help.

According to Mayoclinic.org, there are a number of triggers that can cause haemorrhoids, including:

    • Stress
    • Constipation
    • Pregnancy
    • Straining during a bowel movement
    • Sitting down for too long
    • Obesity
    • Diarrhoea
    • Obesity
    • Anal intercourse
    • Heavy lifting
    • Low-fibre diet

Many people suffer for unnecessarily long periods of time with the condition because they are too embarrassed to seek medical attention. This condition can normally be treated quite easily and there are a wide variety of treatment options available to ease your symptoms.

How do Anusol Plus HC Suppositories effectively treat piles?

Each of the active ingredients contained in Anusol Plus HC suppositories have properties that can aid in the treatment of piles. These ingredients each work together in different ways to provide full relief:

    • Hydrocortisone acetate is a mild steroid which can help to reduce inflammation.
    • Balsam peru has a protective action on sore areas, which could help healing; it is also mildly antiseptic.
    • Benzyl benzoate also has mild antiseptic properties.
    • Zinc oxide and bismuth salts are mildly antiseptic and astringent, helping to soothe raw areas.

Anusol Plus HC suppositories can be used for up to one week. You should talk to your doctor if your piles have not cleared up after this time.

What is the difference between suppository and topical?

There are two main types of haemorrhoids, external and internal. Both have different symptoms and are treated in a slightly different way. Here are the main differences between topical treatment and suppositories to treat haemorrhoids.

External haemorrhoids are present around the opening of the anus and are easy to feel and see. Internal haemorrhoids occur inside the rectum and are harder to feel and see.

Topical treatments such as creams, ointments and pastes are typically used to treat external haemorrhoids as they can easily be applied to the affected area.

Suppositories are typically used to treat internal haemorrhoids; they are inserted further into the anus where the medicine is absorbed by the rectal tissue.

Suppositories should be applied 2 to 4 times daily for approximately 7 days. It is recommended to only use a suppository after a bowel movement to prevent it from being pushed out.

Topical treatments on the other had can be used whenever you need relief from symptoms. Topical treatments are used more often than suppositories as the relief they give for symptoms are not as long lasting. This is because the suppository breaks down slower and is absorbed by the rectal tissue more slowly, suppressing symptoms for a longer period.

  7. What is the difference between Anusol and Anusol HC?

Anusol HC’s only difference to normal Anusol is that it contains the corticosteroid medicine, hydrocortisone acetate.

How long can Anusol Plus HC suppositories be used for?

Anusol Plus HC suppositories can be used for up to seven days. You must not use them for longer than this unless your doctor says so.

Is the suppository more effective than the ointment?

The suppositories and ointment contain the same ingredients, so it is purely down to personal preference as to which you use. However, suppositories are more suited to treating internal haemorrhoids, while the ointment can be used for both internal and external haemorrhoids.

Can I use Anusol Plus HC suppositories every day?

You should use them up to three times a day for a maximum of seven days.

How long do they take to work?

Anusol Plus HC suppositories should have treated your haemorrhoids within one week. If your haemorrhoids have not got any better after seven days of treatment, speak to your doctor for advice on what to do.

    Can you burst a haemorrhoid?

You should never try to burst a haemorrhoid. If a haemorrhoid develops a blood clot within a vein, this can sometimes cause it to burst and bleed. Your doctor may decide that surgery is required to treat your haemorrhoids, but this will not be the case for everyone.

What should I do if Anusol doesn’t work?

If you have been using these suppositories for seven days and your haemorrhoids have not improved, you should speak to your doctor for advice. Do not keep using the suppositories for longer than seven days.

Can I stop haemorrhoids from coming back?

Eating a diet that incorporates plenty of fibre and greenery, exercising regularly, avoiding stress and not straining during a bowel movement are all things that can help to decrease the risk of haemorrhoids.

How long should I leave the suppository in for?

Leave the suppository in the back passage once it has been inserted. Once inserted, the suppository will melt, meaning you do not need to take it out.

Can I drink alcohol with it?

Yes, it is safe to drink alcohol while using Anusol Plus HC suppositories. However, cutting back on how much alcohol you drink may help to ease your haemorrhoids.
