About Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer
  1. What is Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer?

Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer is a treatment for fungal nail infections. It is a generic version of Curanail and Loceryl gel, which are over the counter treatments for fungal nail infections.

Amorolfine is an antifungal medicine and the active ingredient contained in the nail lacquer.

You need a prescription to buy Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer.

What is Amorolfine used to treat?

Amorolfine is a medication for adults over the age of 18 who are suffering from a fungal nail infection.

You can use this medicine on infections of either the fingernail or toenail.

It is very important that you continue to use it until your fungal nail infection has cleared. For fingernails, this normally takes around 6 months; for toenails, it is normally around 9 to 12 months. Your doctor will likely check the infected nails every 3 months or so, to see how the treatment is progressing.

Why is Amorolfine recommended for treating fungal nail infections?

Amorolfine is the first-line treatment option for a variety of fungal nail infections and has shown a 90% success rate at clearing or reducing the infections.

Clinical studies have shown that Amorolfine is an effective treatment for fungal nail infections of the toe and fingernails.

It is also well-tolerated, meaning you are at low risk of side effects while using Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer.

    How does Amorolfine work?

Amorolfine works by stopping the production of ergosterol, which is a chemical in fungus that causes nail infections to occur. When ergosterol is not being produced, the fungus's cells break down and the fungus can no longer continue to grow. The infection will clear as your nail grows out, and eventually, only healthy new nail will remain.

Who can use Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer?

You must not use Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer if you are allergic to amorolfine or any of the other ingredients contained in this treatment.

Amorolfine nail lacquer is not suitable for use in children due to a lack of clinical experience.

Speak to your doctor before using this medication if:

    • You have diabetes
    • You have poor blood circulation in your hands or feet
    • You have an underactive immune system, such as the result of suffering from diseases like HIV or from treatments like chemotherapy

You should not buy Amorolfine if you have a destroyed or severely damaged nail.

This list may not be exhaustive. Always make sure you consult the patient information leaflet before you start to use Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer. Here, you will find a complete list of warnings.

Can you buy Amorolfine over the counter?

Amorolfine is a prescription-only medicine (POM) and not for sale over the counter.

Can you buy Amorolfine online in the UK?

You can buy Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer online from Medicine Direct. As this medication is a prescription-strength treatment, you will need to complete an online consultation before you can buy it from our online pharmacy. One of our prescribers will review your answers and assess your condition to ensure that this medicine is the most suitable for you.

Never order any form of medicine online unless it is from a registered pharmacy like Medicine Direct. We are fully regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which means that we can guarantee our customers nothing but genuine forms of the medication they require.

  2. How to apply Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer

Apply Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer once or twice a week, as your doctor has instructed you.

    1. Before applying Amorolfine for the first time, clean the nail and file down the affected area of the nail using the nail file provided.
    2. Using the swabs that come with the medicine, clean the nail’s surface.
    3. Using one of the spatulas, apply the varnish to the entire infected nail. If you are applying it to more than one nail, clean the spatula between applications.
    4. Clean the spatula using the swabs provided after applying the lacquer.
    5. Allow the lacquer around 3 minutes to dry on the nail(s).

Read the patient information leaflet for a full list of instructions.

You must not stop using Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer before your doctor tells you that it is safe to do so. If you stop using this treatment before the infection is cleared, or before your doctor tells you to stop using it, your infection could come back again.

  3. Side Effects

Like all medication, Amorolfine nail lacquer comes with the risk of certain side effects, although not everyone who uses it will get them.

Even when used as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, you may still experience some side effects while using Amorolfine nail lacquer, although you should still be receiving the benefits of the treatment at the same time.

Rare side effects may include a burning sensation that occurs in the area around your nail while you use the treatment.

You may also suffer nail damage, discolouration or fragile or brittle nails.

Please note, this is not an exhaustive list; please refer to the patient information leaflet for more serious reactions you may suffer as a result of using this product.

  4. Warnings and drug interactions

Before using Amorolfine, you should inform your doctor if you are currently using any other medication. This includes both prescription and non-prescription medicine, herbal remedies, vitamins and supplements.

Do not use artificial nails while using Amorolfine nail lacquer. It is safe for you to use cosmetic nail varnish, but you should wait for at least 10 minutes after you have applied Amorolfine before painting your nails.

    Pregnancy and breastfeeding

You should not use this treatment without speaking to a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You must inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are trying to get pregnant, before using this treatment. Similarly, you must also make sure your doctor is aware if you are currently breastfeeding. A more suitable medication may be available for you to use.

Amorolfine should be applied once or twice a week unless your doctor instructs you to do otherwise.

How will I know when it has cured my infection?

How long do I need to use Amorolfine?

If you are treating a fungal fingernail infection, it will normally take about 6 months to treat. Fungal toenail infections are more likely to need between 9 and 12 months of treatment.

    Is Amorolfine a steroid?

No, Amorolfine is a morpholine antifungal medicine. It is not a steroid.

What happens if I don’t get my fungal infection treated?

Left untreated, the fungus from the toenail can spread to the surrounding skin, which can sometimes cause athlete’s foot. You should always seek treatment for a fungal nail infection.

Can I apply nail varnish while using Amorolfine?

Yes, nail varnish can be worn while using this treatment. However, you should allow Amorolfine nail lacquer at least 10 minutes to get to work before you paint your nails. If you do paint your nails, the varnish must be removed before you apply Amorolfine again.
