What are the benefits of using Elocon Ointment?
Elocon Scalp Lotion is a prescription-only medicine which is classed as a 'potent corticosteriod'. It is an effective and fast-acting treatment to reduce the redness and itchiness that is caused by psoriasis and dermatitis; these are skin problems that affect the scalp.
Elocon contains an anti-inflammatory medicine called mometasone furoate 0.1 % w/w. This active ingredient helps to soothe the redness and relieve the soreness and itching that comes with psoriasis and dermatitis.
It can be used by adults and children alike, when it has been prescribed by a doctor to treat a scalp condition.

How Elocon works
Elocon Scalp Lotion belongs to a group of medicines called topical corticosteroids. For this medicine to work effectively, the patient must apply the lotion to the surface of the skin to reduce the redness and itching that comes with dermatitis and psoriasis.
Elocon also moisturises the skin and slows down the growth rate of skin cells, which helps to relieve the symptoms of psoriasis. By slowing down the production of itchy skin cells, it is able to treat the skin that already exists on the scalp, helping to promote healing and allow the skin to return to a normal state.
What causes psoriasis & common symptoms
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes itchy, red, scaly or flaky skin to flare up. Around 1 in 50 people suffer from psoriasis in the UK. The flare-ups are often triggered by excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, stress or certain medications. A psoriasis flare-up may also be a reaction to irritants in certain hygiene products.
The exact cause of this condition is unknown, but it is believed to be the immune system defending itself against an infection that doesn't really exist in your body. This over-sensitivity speeds up your skin cells' development and causes the skin cells to mount on the surface.
Why psoriasis affects the scalp
Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, but the scalp is one of the most commonly affected areas for this condition. In fact, around 50% of all cases of psoriasis are on the scalp.
Your scalp is generally a warmer area of skin because it is covered by hair, which may account for why it is a common place to get psoriasis. However, the definitive reason as to why it affects the scalp is unknown.
Elocon Scalp Lotion vs. Betnovate & Betacap
Betnovate and Betacap are also prescribed fro dermatitis and psoriasis of the scalp. Elocon contains mometasone furoate, which is a steroid; in comparison, Betacap and Betnovate both contain betamethasone. Both betamethasone and mometasone furoate are classed as potent steroids and the treatments all have a similar strength level.
In most cases, it is down to the doctor to decide while treatment is the most suitable for the patient to use. Speak to your doctor about all the possible treatment options available for your condition.
