What is Cialis used to treat?
Cialis (tadalafil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction and the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. It works by relaxing the muscles of the blood vessels, which causes blood to flow more easily to certain areas of the body. The effects of Cialis can last much longer than other erectile dysfunction medicines such as Viagra, being reported to last up to 36 hours in some cases.
It is possible to switch and change your erectile dysfunction medicine after consulting with your doctor or pharmacist to find out which one works best to your schedule; they all work in the same basic way and so create similar results, just with varying time limits.
The active ingredient in Cialis is tadalafil. It is known to work relatively quickly, taking just 20 minutes to become effective. Another benefit of Cialis (tadalafil) over other erectile dysfunction medicines is that if you take the daily tablet, it will continuously be effective, meaning you should be able to arouse an erection at any time.

Cialis Dosage
Cialis (tadalafil) is available to buy in various doses. It can ether be taken in its daily dosage strength of between 2.5mg to 5mg, or as a 36-hour dose which typically comes in 10mg to 20mg strengths.
Cialis Daily: This is the only erection pill that you can take every day and so build up a continuous ability to get an erection. It means that the patient does not need to plan intercourse.
Cialis 2.5mg tablets
This lowest strength dose of Cialis is taken as a daily tablet. If you experience side effects from taking the 5mg dose, you will be reviewed and prescribed this lower strength form of the medicine as it means that 5mg was too powerful for you.
Cialis 5mg tablets
If you are following the daily dose variant of Cialis, you will generally be prescribed the 5mg strength tablet by your doctor. The two daily doses work in the same way; the only difference is the strength of the medicine.
Cialis Regular (36 hour): The recommended starting dose is one 10mg before sexual activity. It is to be taken 30 minutes before sexual activity. It can still be found to be effective 36 hours after being consumed.
Cialis 10mg tablets
This is not the daily dose. It should not be taken more than once a day, and is not recommended for continuous daily administration. It is intended to be taken prior to anticipated sexual activity.
Cialis 20mg tablets
20mg is the strongest dose of Cialis. It will be prescribed by your doctor if lower doses have not proved effective. It is not intended or recommended for continuous daily use, and should only be taken once in a day. Its effects can last up to 36 hours.
How to take Cialis for erectile dysfunction
Always take Cialis tablets exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. Read the patient information leaflet thoroughly before you start taking the tablets; speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are unsure of how to take them.
Cialis can be taken with or without food, but they should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets.
Take one tablet at least 30 minutes before you intend to have sex. Do not take more than one tablet a day; this medicine is not for continued daily use, no matter what the dose.
The usual dose is Cialis 10mg, although your doctor may increase this dose if 10mg does not work well enough.
For these tablets to work properly, you will still need to be sexually aroused to gain and maintain an erection.
What if I take too much?
If you accidentally overdose on tadalafil tablets, it may result in certain unpleasant side effects, which can include:
- Feeling dizzy
- Headaches
- Stuffy nose
- Blurred vision or other eyesight problems
- Indigestion
These reactions will normally go away when you stop using the tablets. Speak to your doctor if you are worried about these reactions, or if they do not go away.
