About Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream
  1. What is Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream?

Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream is a combination of two medicines, the corticosteroid betamethasone valerate and the antifungal/antibacterial medicine clioquinol.

When combined, these medicines provide effective treatment for skin conditions like eczema, insect bites and psoriasis.

You can only buy Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream on prescription.

What is Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream used to treat?

This medicine is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, insect bites and other skin rashes.

Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream works by actively reducing swelling. It is also effective in helping to protect the skin from infection, which can be a particularly high risk if you have used airtight dressings to cover the skin problem, as this creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

Why is Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream recommended for skin problems?

Betamethasone valerate is a powerful corticosteroid medicine that has long been used for various skin conditions. It is able to effectively reduce itching, redness and swelling that comes with the likes of eczema and psoriasis.

When paired with clioquinol, it is able to give comprehensive treatment for many different problems.

Side effects are also normally minimal.

How does Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream work?

This medicine contains two active ingredients, betamethasone valerate and clioquinol. Betamethasone valerate is a strong corticosteroid, which works to reduce the skin's inflammation and irritation. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce the swelling of skin by inhibiting the release of chemicals that cause inflammation.

Clioquinol has both antibacterial and antifungal properties. This allows it to prevent infection by stopping bacteria from growing and multiplying.

Who can use Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream?

Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream provides effective relief from a number of skin conditions. However, it may not be suitable for everyone to use.

Do not use this product if you are allergic to clioquinol, betamethasone valerate or any of the other ingredients contained in this cream (please refer to the Ingredients tab for full details).

Do not use this medicine on inflamed skin around the genitals or anus, unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so.

Always read the patient information leaflet and packaging thoroughly for full information on who this medicine is suitable for. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are still unsure.

    Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream alternatives

The main active ingredient, Betamethasone Valerate is available as a cream and is available to buy at Medicine Direct.

Many medicines are available for the treatment of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. A similar medicine also available from Medicine Direct is Betamethasone with Neomycin Cream. Neomycin is an antibiotic medicine that works to stop bacteria from producing the proteins it needs to survive. This helps to kill infections of the skin.

Other topical corticosteroid creams and ointments can be ordered from our online pharmacy after completing an online consultation questionnaire. Creams and ointments like Betnovate and Clobetasone work to relieve inflammation and irritation swiftly and effectively.

Fucidin Cream contains an antibiotic medicine (fusidic acid), which is able to treat infected skin within one week. This makes it an effective treatment for when eczema and other skin problems become infected.

  2. Dosage and Directions

Our pharmacists and prescribers follow NICE guidelines when prescribing Betamethasone with clioquinol cream.

How to use Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream

Always apply Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Read the patient information leaflet thoroughly and speak to your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance if you are still not sure of how to use it.

This medicine is for external use only.

    Directions

Use this product once or twice a day. Wash your hands before and after applying the medicine.

Apply a thin layer of the cream carefully to the affected area(s).

If you have been using any airtight dressings on the affected skin, you should clean the area before using the cream. Apply a new dressing after you have applied the cream.

If you have not noticed any improvement after using this product for a few days, please speak to your doctor.

Continued use of this product may cause an infection to become resistant to clioquinol.

If you are using any other topical medicines alongside this one, you should wait for at least 30 minutes between applying one treatment before applying the other. This will stop the medicine from being diluted.

  3. Side Effects

While using this medication, you may experience:

    • A burning or itching sensation on or around the affected area
    • Bumps under areas of skin that are affected by psoriasis

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if any of these reactions bother you or do not go away.

  7. Can I use this cream on my face?

Do not apply Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream to your face unless your doctor tells you to. This is because steroids can thin the skin, which is a particular risk to the face as this skin is thinner than most other areas on your body.

How long should I use this cream for?

This cream should only be used in the short term to avoid thinning of the skin. If your skin problem has not got any better after a few days of using Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream, tell your doctor.

Can I apply it to broken skin?

You should not apply this cream to skin that is broken, or that has cuts or burns.

    Is betamethasone valerate an antibiotic?

No, betamethasone valerate is a corticosteroid. Clioquinol is an antibacterial/antifungal medicine; it is this ingredient that works to stop the bacteria from growing.

How long does it take to work?

Your skin should start to get better after a few days of use. Tell your doctor if you have not seen any improvement after using Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream for a few days.

Can steroids make my eczema even worse?

Steroids do not cure eczema, they just work to reduce the inflammation that it causes, which works to make the symptoms more manageable. The clioquinol contained in this cream will work to fight the bacteria. However, if you believe that this cream is making your eczema worse rather than better, tell your doctor.

Is clioquinol good for the skin?

Clioquinol is an effective antibiotic/antibacterial medicine that can effectively treat various infections. However, you should only use it when your doctor advises.

    Can Betamethasone lighten the skin?

Some people do experience skin lightening as a side effect while using topical medications containing betamethasone valerate. However, it must not be used as a skin lightening treatment. You should tell your doctor if you experience any changes to your skin pigmentation.

Can I have vaccinations while I’m using this cream?

Yes, you can still have vaccinations, although you should tell your doctor or nurse that you are using Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream. This is so they can inject you in an area that is not being treated.

It is safe to drink alcohol while using Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream.
