What is Celebrex (Celecoxib)?

Celebrex is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), specifically a COX-2 Inhibitor, which is used to treat pain and inflammation for a number of conditions. Celebrex works by stopping the production of a natural substance in the body called COX-2, which is responsible for pain and inflammation. Celebrex is commonly prescribed for arthritis, period pains, acute pain, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

What is Celebrex used to treat?

Celebrex is an anti-inflammatory prescription medicine that can be used to treat a number of conditions. Typically, Celebrex is most commonly prescribed to provide effective treatment for conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis and severe menstrual pain (period pain). Celebrex works by reducing the hormones in your body which are responsible for causing pain and inflammation.

Celebrex is prescribed to individuals who struggle to perform their daily activities due to the pain and inflammation caused by their condition. Celebrex suppresses the pain and inflammation caused, which helps the sufferer to go about their daily life and perform every day tasks much easier.

Celebrex is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that gets to work by reducing the hormones in the body which are responsible for causing pain and inflammation. Like the majority of anti-inflammatory medicines, Celebrex can help to reduce pain and swelling primarily by blocking the main enzyme that is responsible for inflammation, prostaglandins.

How to use Celebrex

You should take Celebrex tablets orally, usually once or twice a day, as directed by your doctor.

Celebrex should be taken with food as the majority of NSAIDs can cause stomach unrest by wearing away the stomach lining. The dosage you are given on prescription by your doctor will depend on the condition you are currently suffering from and the pain you are experiencing.

Celebrex should be swallowed with a full glass of water to ensure the tablet reaches your stomach. It is important to allow the tablet time to fully digest before lying down. Do not lie down for at least10 minutes after consumption.

For certain conditions such as arthritis, it may take your body around 2 weeks to experience the full benefits of Celebrex.

For individuals who are taking this medication as and when they need it, NSAIDs are most effective when taken as soon as you start to experience any pain.

Always read the patient information leaflet before taking any medication.

Who can take Celebrex?

You should always tell your doctor if you have previously had any adverse effects to certain medications, particularly other NSAIDs, aspirin or drugs called sulphonamides (which are used to treat bacterial infections). They may not deem this prescription medicine suitable for you.

Celebrex can help with a wide variety of conditions, but it is not always suitable for everyone. You should inform your doctor any if the following apply to you:

  • You suffer from asthma
  • You have anaemia
  • You smoke
  • You consume alcohol on a regular basis
  • You have diabetes
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You have kidney disease or any other kidney problems
  • You have liver disease or any other liver problems
  • You have nasal polyps

Celebrex should also be used with caution by individuals who have any of the following:

  • Elderly People
  • Heart Failure
  • Oedema (excessive fluid retention)
  • Hypertension
  • High cholesterol

If you have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease, the risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke may increase if you are taking Celebrex. You should speak to your doctor for more information.

Always read the prescription and information leaflet thoroughly before taking any medicine. If you have any doubts or concerns at all, do not hesitate to discuss them with your doctor.

This prescription medicine can also decrease fertility in women, although this is usually reversible once the treatment is complete.

Celebrex Common Side Effects

As with all medicines, Celebrex comes with the risk of certain side effects, although not everyone will suffer from them.

If you experience any of the following, you may be suffering from common reactions associated with taking Celebrex.

Speak to your doctor if you have any of these:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Skin rash
  • Sneezing
  • Fluid build up in the ankles, hands or legs
  • Sore throat
  • Swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Joint pain
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Mild itching/skin rash

It is very important to note that Celebrex and other NSAIDs may increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke, especially if taken over a prolonged period of time. If you have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease, the risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke may increase if you are taking Celebrex.

Celebrex can cause ulcers and damage to your stomach due to certain ingredients within the medication wearing away your stomach lining. The risk of this is increased particularly if you are taking Celebrex on an empty stomach. To reduce the risk of this you must only take this medication on a full stomach or with food.

Celebrex Dosage

It is important to always take Celebrex as prescribed by your doctor and ensure that you complete the full course of your medication to experience the full benefits. Celebrex comes in a number of dosages:

Celebrex 100 mg tablets

100mg is typically the starting dose used for any patient that has been prescribed Celebrex. Depending on the severity of your condition this dosage may be increased to 200mg; however, the doctor would always monitor how your body reacts to Celebrex 100mg before increasing the dosage to 200mg. Celbrex 100mg is usually prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Celebrex 200 mg Tablets

Your doctor may choose to prescribe Celebrex 200mg tablets if your condition is quite severe and the pain caused by your symptoms is quite high. Typically, Celebrex 200mg tablets are used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and to manage acute pain. Celebrex 200mg tablets should usually be taken twice per day with a meal, usually morning and evening.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you have been prescribed Celebrex 100mg or 200mg tablets, it is important that you take them exactly as instructed by your doctor. We recommend setting frequent daily reminders for when it is time to take your tablets.

If you do forget to take a dose, you should take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, you should simply skip the forgotten dose and continue as normal with your next dose. Never double up on your medication to try and make up for a missed dose.

If you accidentally double dose, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist.
