Domperidone is usually prescribed to those needing help with bowel and stomach movements. Other symptoms effectivley aided by this medication include nausea, vomiting and breast milk production.
What is Domperidone used for?
Domperidone is licensed for the use of treating stomach and bowel disorders and symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. It is an effective treatment when treating stomach and bowel issues associated with medications used in treating Parkinsons disease. Domperidone works by blocking chemical messages sent to the brain that trigger cause feelings of nausea and the need to vomit. Domperidone allows food to travel through the stomach with more ease by helping the muscles at the top of the stomach contract.
Domperidone in pregnancy and breastmilk stimulation
Domperidone has been used to increase milk in women whose breast milk is in low supply due to numerous reasons. However, this is an unlicensed use for lactation. The use of Domperidone during breastfeeding is understood to be too small to be harmful to a baby or infant.
The dosage for Domperidone differs from patient to patient, depending on what the medication is being prescribed to treat and what strength is required.
You should always follow the dosage directions set by the doctor on your prescription label. Taking Domperidone more frequently and in a higher dose than prescribed does not alleviate symptoms any faster and may increase side effects.
It is not recommended to “double up” if you have missed your dose. Please follow the guidance set by the doctor on your prescription label.
