About Prochlorperazine 3mg Buccal Tablets
  1. What are Prochlorperazine 3mg Buccal Tablets?

Prochlorperazine is an anti-sickness medicine that is taken to prevent nausea and vomiting. It contains the active ingredient prochlorperazine maleate and can be taken to treat the likes of morning sickness and vertigo.

You must have a prescription to buy Prochlorperazine Buccal Tablets.

What are Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets used to treat?

Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets are an effective medicine for treating nausea and vomiting.

You can use Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets to treat nausea that comes with a variety of different conditions, including:

    • Morning sickness
    • Travel sickness
    • Migraines
    • Vertigo (dizziness)
    • Conditions that affect balance
    • Sickness that comes from cancer treatments, general anaesthetics or from taking other medicines

In some cases, Prochlorperazine may also be prescribed to treat anxiety.

Why is Prochlorperazine recommended for nausea?

Prochlorperazine has been tested in clinical trials and has shown to be a very effective treatment for the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

Furthermore, the medicine has been shown to work quickly. Taking the buccal tablet version of this medicine is ideal for people who have trouble swallowing medicine. You simply place them under your upper lip and allow them to dissolve in your mouth.

    How does Prochlorperazine work?

The active ingredient contained in Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets is prochlorperazine maleate, which belongs to a group of medicines known as phenothiazines. Prochlorperazine maleate works by blocking the dopamine receptors in the section of the brain that causes nausea. This prevents nausea messages from being sent to the “vomiting centre” in your brain, helping to stop you from feeling sick.

Typically, Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets will start to work in around 30 to 60 minutes. Buccal tablets are most effective if you take them after meals, as this gives them more time to dissolve.

Who can take Prochlorperazine Buccal Tablets?

Comprehensive information on who this medicine may not be suitable for can be found in the patient information leaflet.

Do not take Prochlorperazine tablets if any of the following apply to you:

    • You have any prostate gland problems
    • You have any liver problems
    • You have any blood problems

To buy Prochlorperazine buccal tablets online from Medicine Direct, you will first need to fill out an online form. This will ask you questions about your medical history and condition; it will then be reviewed by one of our certified prescribers to make sure that Prochlorperazine is the most suitable medicine for your problem.

    Prochlorperazine alternatives

There are several anti-sickness/ nausea medications available to order from Medicine Direct. There is insufficient evidence to prove which medicine is the most effective at relieving nausea, so you might need to try a few until you find the one which best relieves your symptoms.

Prochlorperazine is also available as the branded Stemetil 5mg tablets, or as generic Prochlorperazine tablets. These medicines work in the same way as Prochlorperazine buccal tablets, but you will instead swallow the tablets whole.

Antihistamine medicine which is used to treat nausea such as Cyclizine 50mg tablets and Dopamine Agonists such as Domperidone are also renowned anti-sickness medicines. These tablets will also work to block the messages being sent to the vomiting centre in the brain and get to work after around half an hour.

  2. How to take Prochlorperazine Buccal Tablets

Our pharmacists and prescribers follow NICE guidelines when prescribing Prochlorperazine.

The recommended dose for adults and children over 12 years old is one or two tablets twice a day.

    1. Place the tablet high along the top gum under your top lip.
    2. The tablet will adhere to the gum and dissolve. Allow it to dissolve completely, which may take 1–2 hours; most people stop noticing the tablet after a few minutes.
    3. Do not move the tablet around your mouth with your tongue as this can cause it to dissolve too quickly.

Do not chew or swallow the tablet.

If you wear dentures, you can place the tablet anywhere that is comfortable between your lip and gum.

It is best if you take Prochlorperazine buccal tablets after meals.

Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full instructions.

    Is Prochlorperazine addictive?

This medicine does not normally cause addiction, but if you stop taking it suddenly after using it for a long period, you may experience withdrawal symptoms like nausea or sleep problems. If you have been taking Prochlorperazine for a long time and wish to stop taking it, speak to your doctor about how to gradually reduce your dose.

    Will Prochlorperazine make you high?

If abused like more common drugs, Prochlorperazine is not known to cause euphoria. However, it can still have mood and perception-altering effects. Never take more than the prescribed dose of any medicine. Taking a large dose of Prochlorperazine can be fatal.

    Are there other anti-sickness medicines?

Yes, there are other anti-sickness medicines, including Domperidone and Cyclizine which are available from our online pharmacy. There is not enough evidence to say which is the most effective at helping with nausea symptoms. You may need to try more than one anti-sickness medicine to find the best one for you.
