What is Spedra?
Spedra (avanafil) is a widely prescribed medication to treat men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED). It is part of a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
As a treatment for erectile dysfunction, Spedra tablets work by helping men to gain and maintain a firmer erection for longer during sexual intercourse.
It can be taken by men over the age of 18. You cannot buy Spedra tablets without a prescription.
What is Spedra used to treat?
Spedra is an oral medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Taking this medicine if you suffer from erectile problems can help you to have a normal and satisfying sex life.
Taking Spedra tablets helps you to gain an erection that is sufficient to have penetrative sex with your partner. It gets to work in as little time as 20 minutes and will help you to maintain an erection for around 4 hours.
Spedra is available in three doses: 50mg, 100mg and 200mg tablets. While 100mg is the average dose for men who find it difficult to achieve an erection, some people may require a higher or lower dose, both of which can be prescribed by a doctor.
Clinical trials have shown that significantly more men who took Spedra found that it was an effective ED treatment compared to men who took a placebo medicine.
How does Spedra work?
Spedra contains avanafil, which belongs to a class of medicines known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which increases the blood flow to the penis. Doing this helps you to get an erection and stay erect when you are aroused.
You will still need to be sexually aroused for Spedra to take effect. For this reason, you and your partner should engage in foreplay before attempting intercourse.
Spedra comes in doses of 50, 100 or 200mg. The usual recommended dose is 100mg, although your doctor may prescribe the 50mg or 200mg dose if they believe you need a higher or lower dose than this. You may need a higher or lower dose if you are already taking particular medicines.
Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours. It is recommended that you should leave at least two days between doses.
Common Side Effects of Spedra
- Nasal congestion
- Feeling flush or an increase in temperature/sweating
For serious adverse effects, please refer to the Side Effects tab on this page. If you experience any of the serious adverse effects, you should call 111 or 999 immediately.
Please note that this list is not exhaustive. For a more extensive list, please see the leaflet inside the medication box and familiarise yourself with all the possible adverse effects before you use Spedra.
How to take Spedra
You can take Spedra once a day, 30 minutes before you expect to have sexual intercourse.
For the drug to work, you will need to be sexually stimulated. You should engage in foreplay with your partner after taking Spedra to gain an erection.
You can take it before or after eating, but please note that food in your stomach can delay the effects of the medicine.
You should not eat grapefruit products or drink any grapefruit juice while taking this medicine. This is because it can increase the risk of side effects.
Drinking alcohol when taking Spedra tablets can slow down the effects of the medicine and impact your ability to gain an erection.
Read the patient information leaflet for full instructions. Ask your doctor if you need additional guidance.
Who can use Spedra?
This is an erectile dysfunction treatment for men who are over the age of 18. Spedra must not be taken by women or children.
Spedra will not help you if you do not suffer from erectile dysfunction.
If any of the below apply to you, you should not take Spedra:
- Heart problems
- Liver or kidney problems
- Recently suffered a heart attack or stroke
- An allergy to avanafil or any other ingredients used in Spedra
- Low or high blood pressure not controlled by medicine
- Eye problems
- Are taking medicines for HIV or AIDS
- Are taking nitrate medicines for chest pain
Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.
This list is not exhaustive. Before you start to take a new medication, always read the patient information leaflet that comes with it for a full list of reasons why it may be unsuitable for you. Ask your doctor if you are not sure.
Can you buy Spedra over the counter?
Spedra cannot be bought over the counter. Your doctor must prescribe this medication for you.
Can you buy Spedra online in the UK?
Yes, you can buy Spedra online, although you should only order medicine from regulated pharmacies like Medicine Direct. This safeguards you against buying fake or unsafe versions of the medicine you require.
Spedra is a prescription-only medicine (POM), so to order it online from our pharmacy, you will first need to complete a confidential online consultation. All you need to do is fill out a questionnaire about your condition and medical history, which will be reviewed by one of our prescribers to make sure Spedra is suitable for you to take.
Although erectile dysfunction can put a strain on your love life and be a difficult problem to deal with, there are a range of different treatments to help with the problem.
The most famous treatment for impotency and erectile problems, Viagra, is also available to buy from Medicine Direct. The ‘little blue pill’ also gets to work in a short length of time and produces long-lasting results, allowing you to engage in normal sexual activity.
Cialis tablets should be taken 30 minutes before having sex and have also been found to last longer than most other treatments for ED. This medicine is also in stock at Medicine Direct.
If you have trouble swallowing tablets or prefer a topical medicine, Vitaros cream can be bought from Medicine Direct. This cream is inserted into the opening of the penis.
At Medicine Direct, we sell the three most popular strengths of Spedra: 50mg, 100mg and 200mg. All of them come in the form of tablets and the packages contain between 4 tablets and 32 tablets, depending on the dose.
Your doctor will try and maintain your dose to be effective in as low a strength dosage as possible. The average starting dose for Spedra is 100mg, which is sufficient for most men. However, this dosage can be increased if 100mg is not effective. This should be discussed with your doctor before the dose is altered.
Our pharmacists and prescribers follow NICE prescribing guidelines when prescribing Spedra for erectile dysfunction.
Spedra reviews are generally glowing and research has shown that this medicine is able to treat erectile dysfunction in around 60% of men. This is less than the success rate of Viagra, but Spedra tablets work much faster, normally taking effect in between 15 and 30 minutes.
Common adverse reactions to Spedra are feeling dizzy and nausea. If you experience these feelings, you should not use tools or machines, nor should you drive or cycle. Always read the information leaflet before taking any medication.
Spedra can remain in your blood for at least 6 hours after taking it. However, it remains active for up to 5 hours.
If you are a valid UK citizen and have a prescription from a doctor, you will be able to purchase Spedra online in the UK with us at Medicine Direct. If you do not yet have a prescription for Spedra, you can fill in one of our health questionnaires which will be reviewed by one of our doctors. After assessing your answers, the doctor will then prescribe you the medicine if they deem it appropriate to do so.
These tablets work incredibly quickly and come in a wide variety of dosages to treat a large range of men who suffer from erectile dysfunction. By helping the blood vessels in the penis to relax, Spedra tablets produce long lasting results and have been proven to help men get an erection by improving the blood flow to the penis.
Like other erectile dysfunction treatments, Spedra tablets improve blood flow to the penis by relaxing the blood vessels, helping men to maintain an erection. Compared to Viagra (Sildenafil), Spedra tablets work much faster, taking effect in around 30 minutes; although in some men it may even begin to work 15 minutes.
You can drink alcohol whilst taking Spedra, but you should not try to do so before taking your initial tablet. This is because Spedra can sometimes make people feel dizzy. Once you have discerned how the medicine effects you it may be safe to drink in moderation. Please note, however, that drinking alcohol at the same time as taking Spedra may result in a lower your blood pressure and increase the rate of your heart beat. Drinking alcohol in its own right is also known to contribute to difficulties in getting an erection. So, in general, patients are advised to avoid drinking.
You will be able to notice the effects of Spedra within 30 minutes of taking it. Between 30-45 minutes after taking the medicine is the time when it is meant to have reached maximum concentration in your blood. If you have eaten before using the drug, this may slow down the effect as it will have to wait longer to be digested into the blood stream.
If you have a known heart condition you need to discuss this with your doctor before beginning to take any erectile dysfunction medicine. Depending on what medicine you may be taking to treat your heart condition, Spedra may not be appropriate for you to use.
Generally, men with erectile dysfunction are in good health. However, it can be an indicator that they have circulatory problems. Sometimes, doctors may check for diabetes, high cholesterol or blood pressure and a range of other conditions to check that you are healthy.
The recommended dose is 100mg, taken about half an hour before sexual activity. Spedra 200mg is the maximum dose, which can be taken if 50mg/100mg is not effective. The dosage can also be decreased to 50mg if required. However, you should always speak to your doctor before altering the dose you take.
